The breaker
Well pumps usually run on their own double-pole breaker in the main panel. A storm or power blip can trip it. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us; a pump that keeps tripping needs a contractor, not another reset.
The pressure gauge
It is on the pipe next to the pressure tank, usually in the basement or utility room. A reading of zero with the pump silent points to power, the pressure switch or the pump. A needle that swings up and down while water runs points to the tank.
Every faucet, and the sounds
Confirm the problem is the whole house, not one fixture. Then listen: a pump that runs nonstop, a switch that clicks rapidly, or water that spits air are all clues. Note anything that changed recently, including outages or lightning.

Check the breaker for the pump circuit, look at the pressure gauge near the pressure tank, and confirm the problem affects every faucet. Reset a tripped breaker once; if it trips again, leave it off. How much does well pump repair or replacement cost in McHenry County?

Are the contractors licensed?
Illinois requires anyone who installs or repairs well pumps to hold a Water Well Pump Installation Contractor license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health (Water Well and Pump Installation Contractor's License Act, 225 ILCS 345). Contractors in our referral network must hold a current license. Ask any contractor for their license number before work begins; you can confirm it with IDPH's private water program.
Is it the pump, the pressure switch or the pressure tank?
No water with a silent pump usually points to power, the pressure switch or the pump itself. Pressure that surges and drops while water runs, or a pump that clicks on and off rapidly, usually points to a waterlogged or failed pressure tank. A pump that runs constantly can mean a leak, a worn pump or a low water level. Only a licensed contractor on site can confirm the cause.
